Heartwood Ranch Cohousing, 350 acres in southwest Colorado. Completed in 2000; Happily rolling into our 16th year. Visitors and new member inquiries welcome.
Heartwood is located twenty minutes east of Durango, and just west of Bayfield. Our Community includes 24 private homes on private lots, a large and beautiful Common House with open-air terrace and Village Green, separate workshop and greenhouse, all clustered snugly on 7 acres, surrounded by nearly 350 acres of community-owned woodlands and open space, including 50 acres of irrigated pastures, community gardens, and a spring fed pond.
We share our land with various numbers of chickens, turkeys, horses, cattle, pigs, and llamas, as well as the occasional black bear, bobcat, mountain lion, coyote, rattlesnake, elk, deer, waterfowl, eagles, hawks and many song and hummingbirds.
Residing at 7100 feet elevation, where the high red-rock deserts of the Four Corners region merge into the majestic, 13-14,000 ft San Juan Mountains – we thrive in one of Colorado's most stunning regions. We also typically enjoy 300 or more days of sun annually, so keep your sun-hat on!! And moderate temperatures throughout the year make our full four seasons some of the most enjoyable to be found in the US.
While many of our residents work professionally, off-site, we also host multiple home-based businesses and associated resources that support a culture of personal and professional creativity and innovation, from back-to-the-land family farmers – to thriving 21st century web-based business successes.
Our resident population numbers have generally hovered around 70 individuals, with ages ranging from newborns and toddlers to well north of 70. On-site home-schooling numbers have ebbed and flowed over the years; we also benefit from excellent local schools, with a variety of options to choose from. And nearby Durango is host to both Fort Lewis College and to Mercy Regional Medical Center, a state-of-the-art, acute care hospital and medical campus.
A limited number of ownership and rental opportunities currently available; please visit our website and, under Visits tab, look for What's Available.
If your goals begin with the deep connection of community, living at Heartwood will also provide you with easy opportunities for dirt-under-the-fingernails home-grown simplicity, an active outdoor lifestyle that includes world-class hiking, road and mountain biking, skiing, snow-shoeing, kayaking and rafting, weekend trips to the desert or the high mountain wilderness, or an evening of excellent food and entertainment in nearby Durango. And yes – it can be exhausting at times;-)
As we've all come to know over our 15+ years, Heartwood is the place to live, love, put down roots, raise your family, grow together, prosper and change the world, one neighborhood at a time. www.heartwoodcohousing.com and www.facebook.com/HeartwoodCohousing
