Swans Market Cohousing is a small gated urban cohousing community (20 units with about 30 adults and 5 children) tucked away in the downtown Old Oakland Historic District. Located on 10th and Clay Streets in the heart of Oakland’s “Gourmet Ghetto,” Swan’s Market Cohousing is in the retrofitted historic Swans Market building. The neighborhood has a walkability score of 98/100. A farmers market sets up outside every Friday. The community is 2.5 blocks from the nearest BART (subway-metro) station, a 15-minute ride to either downtown Berkeley or downtown San Francisco.

Community amenities include a common house with a large kitchen and dining/seating area, two disability access bathrooms, a kids’ playroom, laundry room, workout/exercise room, workshop, community garden, and guest room. The outdoor space or “Swans Way” central corridor is generously planted with fruit trees, vegetables, and artful patio gardens. The outdoor table is a community gathering spot. A small community garden has flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees. An elevator goes from the ground floor to the main living areas on the second floor. Thought has been given to disability access in the design of the community.

All the traditional aspects of cohousing are active here, including common meals 3 times a week, monthly work parties, and neighbors helping neighbors. Participation and engagement in the community is high. People share, food, time, tools, friendship, resources, and skills.

We are looking for an individual or a family who will be great community members, trustworthy, good neighbors, friendly, and will participate in community activities including common meals (optional to eat, expected to cook about once every 5 weeks), work parties, and at least one committee. In exchange, you’ll discover a European like mini-village that will feel like a peaceful retreat to come home to every day…right in the middle of downtown!

Rent is $3,500 a month and includes garbage/recycling/compost, water, gas, heat, high-speed Internet services; a secured parking place in the garage; and use of the guest room and other amenities on site. Electricity is not included and runs about $40 a month, depending on usage.

Interested? See the Web page at https://www.swansmarketcohousing.org and fill out our Renters Questionnaire or contact us at bonnie [at] swansway [dot] com. There are better photos of the unit there (files too big for this venue). We look forward to hearing from you!
