Cohousing Community coming to Anacortes

Skagit Cohousing is excited to have secured a beautiful building site of over 4 acres for a new neighborhood in Anacortes, WA. The property looks out over meadowland with Mt. Baker visible in the distance. City services and amenities are readily accessible. Anacortes Community Forest Lands with 50 miles of hiking/biking trails through forest, wetlands, meadows and lakeshore are just 2 blocks away. The marina and Washington State Ferry Terminal access Puget Sound and the scenic San Juan Islands. Those who enjoy culture close to home participate in the thriving art and theater community.

Anacortes is located in the Skagit Valley between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C. This is a great place to live, work, and play! The valley’s farmlands produce vegetables, seeds, berries, apples, and, of course, tulip and daffodil bulbs. Outdoor recreation opportunities abound. State, county, and city parks make biking, hiking, camping, boating, and fishing easily accessible. For lovers of the arts, McIntyre Performing Arts Center provides a venue for local and visiting performing groups throughout the year. Skagit Valley College provides educational opportunities for all ages.

Our growing community is now welcoming families to collaborate in building a neighborhood for all ages intentionally designed to promote interaction among neighbors. Smaller private homes will be clustered with larger common spaces. A common house will accommodate frequent shared meals, guest rooms, small group gatherings, celebrations and children’s playtime. Outdoors there will be plenty of room to garden, stroll and play. Community living will allow a lifestyle with less impact on the environment. Parking on the perimeter will create safety for children and pedestrians to walk, chat and explore.

We are currently in the process of selecting an architect. This is an especially good time to become a member as we begin the design process. Members joining in this process will be influential in shaping both the physical structure and the culture of our community.
