Winslow Cohousing Group
Bainbridge Island

Winslow Cohousing is a caring, cooperative community of 30 households living together since April 1992. We are a pedestrian village with open green space and a central Common House, within walking distance of schools, library, medical clinics, shopping, parks, pool, and ferry. We are located on 5 acres in the Winslow district of the City of Bainbridge Island, Washington, one mile from the ferry, a 35-minute ride from downtown Seattle. Bainbridge Island is a small-but-growing community with about 23,000 residents.

Designed as one of the first Cohousing communities in the US, buildings are sited near one other and parking is concentrated near the street to preserve wooded areas and open space. Paved lanes connect all the homes, creating a welcoming pedestrian neighborhood. All construction is to strict energy-saving standards. Our refuse/recycle center and composting projects are part of our care of the environment. Our landscaping uses drought-resistant, hardy, native species, edible by human or wildlife whenever possible. No fertilizers or toxic products are allowed on our land.

An integral part of the community is our centrally located 5,000 square foot Common House. The Common House has dining and meeting space, a large kitchen, a recreation room for children, a fully equipped community office, a guest room, an exercise area, and a laundry for those who do not want laundry facilities in their homes. The orchard is flourishing near the large, sunny community garden. We also have an acre of woods, a children's playground, a basketball area, a pottery studio, and a workshop.

Community meals are offered five nights a week: Sunday through Thursday. Participation is optional and on a scheduled basis, and all who wish to eat take turns either cooking or cleaning. Whether coming home from work or getting out of the house, common meals are a welcome break from the every-day dinner planning, shopping, cooking and cleaning routine.

We are self-managed and expect all residents to commit several hours a month performing tasks necessary to the maintenance and operation of our community. We have a monthly general business meeting where we make decisions by consensus. Since we are a cooperative housing corporation, we also have a board of trustees that meets regularly and on which every member is encouraged to serve.

As a cooperative housing corporation, members own shares in the corporation and have a proprietary lease for a specific home. Besides a home, you also have a share in ownership of the Common House, the grounds, and other common facilities.
